Journal #6
Summary: The last article comes from the book Journal of American College Health, with the article titled Concealed Carry Weapon Permits: A Second Amendment Right or a Recipe for Disaster on Our Nation’s Campuses? This article talks about many main points on the topic of concealed carry on our college campuses. It first talks about how many colleges have had instances where there are tragic shootings. This holds the door open for many people agreeing with the fact that students should be allowed to carry a concealed weapon around their campus to protect themselves.
Synthesis: I think this article does not agree with the use of concealed weapons on college campuses. It is sympathetic towards the campuses that have experience tragic instances where there have been shootings but I think the article thinks that these instances could happen all the time if concealed weapons were allowed and a student felt angry and someone and took matters into their own hands with a weapon.
Critical Thinking: I agree with this article even though I also agree that there should be concealed carry laws everywhere. College campuses are full of immature young adults that make irrational and stupid decisions all the time. Not to mention the pressure of college schoolwork and just leading a college kid life. Anything could happen in that persons life and could tip the scales and literally make them snap and go around shooting everyone. And because that person had a concealed carry permit and weapon, they were allowed to walk around with that weapon. “One argument is that students, in particular, are not mature enough to handle the stressors of college and emerging adulthood and may resort to using their weapons to resolve differences” (paragraph 5). I completely agree with this quote. Someone could get in an argument with another person and it could result to someone getting shot. We are all scared that someone could cause extreme pain and suffering with a weapon on our campuses, but who's to say that allowing concealed carry could make it worse by having everyone carry a weapon?
Questions: There are great questions regarding an actual situation in which guns and people with permit are involved. How does anyone know who the real perpetrator is? What happens when the police arrive on the scene and they see someone with a gun? What if the person was trying to defend him/herself and is shot in case of mistaken identity by the police or another person with a CCW?
