The first article that I read about the issue of teen parenting was called "Teen Pregnancy and Parenting: Myths and Realities". Basically, what this article was saying is that teen parents are more harshly judged by others such as welfare workers. The number of teen pregnancies and parenting have not gone up much since the 1950's, but society has changed their morals and norms. People used to get married at younger ages because sex outside of marriage was not viewed as an okay thing to do, so there were married teen parents. Now, sex outside of marriage isn't looked down on quite so much, therefore, people aren't getting married at such a young age anymore. The way society views teens as parents shapes the way welfare judges them. An adult mother may do one thing and it can be seen as completely normal and not wrong, but a teenage mother could do the same thing and be called out as neglecting or abusing her child. This is good, but try to be a bit more specific in your summary. What morals and norms does society have now? What is the age difference of married couples now as opposed to what it was for our parents' generation? What makes welfare workers judge teen parents more harshly? This will benefit you when you begin writing the paper. Instead of having to go back and reread the article, you'll have all the information here.
This article has not affected my thinking process much, it just suppports how I feel about the "issue".
(For the purpose of an exploratory paper, you should be using articles that do help you change your thinking. An article that reaffirms your thoughts can be good -- it gives you a sense that you're not the only one who holds this view, that you can support your idea -- but it doesn't help the process of critical thinking. Try to use articles that lead you in new conceptual directions.) Being in that situation, I see a lot of what this article has talked about. It's very noticeable how differently people think about teen parents and adult parents. An example would be the typical stereotype of teen parents, people like to assume that the child is being neglected, abused, and will live in poverty for their entire life. While some teen parents have been the cause of such stereotypes, they are not all like that. It depends on the scenario, if a teen girl happens to become pregnant and is still fully dependent on her parents, that looks terrible. While on the other hand, a teen girl who is very independent, has a job, has a bright looking future with college and success in it, that looks better but is still judged the same way by welfare.
This article has made me think about how teen parents are viewed based on the fact that they are a teen and not the fact that they may actually be a very good parent. I've also realized that finding a smaller part of the subject may not be as hard as I made it out. I plan to find more articles about the reasons that teen parents are viewed the way they are versus adult parents. What new questions do you have? What will you research next?
