Journal 1

Journal 1

Summarize: This article is explaining why technology is both good and bad for younger kids. It also argues if this technology makes kids smarter than their parents. It is written by two different professors with conflicting viewpoints. One argues that the ability to use technology is simply a skill and has no meaning towards intelligence. The other argues that it takes a more imaginative mind to be able to use such things.

Think: This article did not really change my thinking at all. Although I do think that the professor talking about how technology is simply a skill is correct. Anyone can learn to use technology so it has no merit on intelligence.

Question: I do not think this will be a very strong source in my paper. It has conflicting viewpoints and does not focus on what I want to be talking about, but I do like the comment that one of the professors made. He stated that the ability to use technology had no merit with intelligence.

Khaldoon,

I'd like to see your exploratory journals go into much more depth.  Your summary should be very detailed in terms of a source's argument and information.  Your other paragraphs -- "Think" and "Question" -- need to be much more in depth, spending time on the critical thinking aspect, weighing out how this influences your exploration and how you will alter your ideas in light of the information.

That said, I realize that part of the reason your paragraphs are short is because you don't find this to be a strong source for your paper.  But remember what I mentioned in lecture about the annotated bibliography: a source that doesn't help your exploration (that doesn't give you new and interesting ways of thinking about the topic) doesn't belong in your paper or on your annotated bib.  Think of it this way: why would you include a source in any paper that doesn't help to shape the message you're trying to communicate to readers?  The same is true for an exploratory paper.

So when you're choosing sources to write about in these journals, don't just choose the first one you come across.  Choose sources that are relevant and important to your process of exploration.
